The fatality in Delhi is the first such case in this new wave of infections. The deceased is a 60-year-old woman suffering from acute intestinal obstruction post-laparotomy. “The COVID-19 finding was incidental,” said the ministry in its bulletin.

On Thursday, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that 19 Covid patients are hospitalised in the national capital, but there is no need to worry. The Delhi government is alert and hospitals are prepared to deal with any eventuality, she said.

According to the latest data from the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), set up under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the emerging variants NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 are responsible for the rise in SARS-CoV-2 cases in the country.

So far, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has not classified either LF.7 or NB.1.8 as Variants of Concern (VOCs) or Variants of Interest (VOIs).
